Suggestions for future edits[edit]

The debate about whether or not thought is possible without language (whether language evolved for thought) should eventually be added and probably as its own section or withing LOTH theories. Pinker and the idea of mentalese should be better developed. Additionally, I feel that the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis should ultimately be its own section and the 'studies' should be incorporated within the section. The 'Other schools of thought' section should be better developed--other schools of thought as opposed to ?? linguistics? philosophy? Honestly, someone should really consider a new outline for this article--but that should be a group effort so I didn't change it myself. BlandK (talk) 18:58, 3 December 2019 (UTC)

Question[edit]

what is the difference between linguis relativ and linguistic determ

They are not necessarily different. Linguistic relativity is the idea that one's language affects the way they view the world. This is divided into a strong and weak view. Linguistic determinism is the strong version of the hypothesis--idea that one's language limits one's thoughts and thought processes such as categorization and memory. Did that help?? Lev Vygotsky?[edit]

Languagesfont For Thought Quotes

From Lev Vygotsky#Thought and language: Another important Vygotskyan contribution concerns the inter-relationship of language development and thought. This concept, explored in Vygotsky's book Thought and Language, establishes the explicit and profound connection between oral language (speech) and the development of mental concepts...Ewlyahoocom 10:54, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Memes[edit]

Memetic theory and/or Memes should be referenced in some way. I can't quite think of a good way to do it right now, so maybe someone else can? 85.178.69.56 17:05, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

Actual research?[edit]

Languagesfont For Thought

Has anyone done actual reasearch on why so many people claim to somehow 'think in language' and what they mean by it? Say by magnetic imaging? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.121.52.247 (talk) 07:54, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Notability[edit]

Languagesfont For Thought Meaning

I think this article is fine in terms of notability - I came here from Google and found all the answers I was looking for, however brief. It's also a topic that gets covered in British college A-level exams, so I think it's worth keeping. Lithium (talk) 13:09, 20 May 2015 (UTC)

Second paragraph[edit]

I'm going to point out that the claim made in the second paragraph, that 'thought comes first, while language is an expression', isn't irrefutable and might well be confusing for someone who's coming to the article looking for a good summary of the philosophical side of the question. 108.15.44.119 (talk) 15:35, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
